We have gift certificates. Ours are the best because:
1) they don't ever expire
2) they don't decrease in value
3) you know they will use them, we will even contact them to remind them
4) you can send them and even folks who live far away can use them
5) not just for babies, but kids, families, and married couples can do something cute.
